In this brief comparison we'll try to show you the differences between them and give you a good idea of what they offer, so you can pick the hybrid sedan that is best for you.

New Features

The new 2020 Prius Prime introduces several important changes, most notably the additional space for a 5th passenger. By removing the rear center console, the Toyota Hybrid can now seat 5 people. They’ve also added 2 USB ports in the back, a new sun visor, and the white trim was replaced with a new black trim.

Available in 2 versions, Preferred and Ultimate, the 2020 IONIQ Hybrid also underwent several changes, including a new grille, a new interior trim, touch controls for heating and air conditioning, ambient lighting and 2 new exterior colours.

The Prius Prime is also available in 2 variants: Basic, which retails at just over $35,000, and Upgrade, for just over $37,000. The Prius Prime can travel up to 1,035 km on a single tank of gas and a fully charged battery. It boasts a combined fuel economy rating of 1.8 Le/100 km in EV mode. The IONIQ, on the other hand, can travel 1,000 km on a single tank of gas and a fully charged battery, which is less than the Toyota sedan.

Their Engines

Sold at a starting price of just under $34,000 for the Preferred version and just over $38,000 for the Ultimate version, the IONIQ Hybrid features a 4-cylinder, 1.6 L engine good for 104 horsepower, a 44.5 kW electric motor, and a 1.6-kWh lithium-ion polymer battery, for a combined output of 164 horsepower. Front-wheel drive and a 6-speed EcoShift dual-clutch transmission complete the powertrain.

The Toyota relies on a 4-cylinder, 1.8 L engine with 95-horsepower, a 53 kW electric motor and an 8.8 kWh lithium-ion battery for a combined output of 121 horsepower. Front-wheel drive and an Electronically-controlled Continuously-Variable Transmission complete the powertrain. They both offer very similar fuel consumption rates of just over 4 L/100 km.

The Difference-Maker

The Toyota Prius Prime boasts more features: LED headlights, an integrated voice-activated navigation system, welcome lights, an illuminated glove box and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, among others. It's also more spacious and offers more head and legroom, so you and your passengers can travel more comfortably.

And if there’s one thing that Hyundai will never be able to match, it’s Toyota’s reputation for reliability, the quality of its components, and the resale value that Toyota has maintained and instilled in all of its models over the years. In fact, to date, more than 13 million hybrid vehicles have found takers worldwide, and Toyota is comfortably in the lead thanks to its hybrid vehicles.

Among the many standard features found on both of our competitors are Push Button Start, Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay compatibility, a rearview camera, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel and much more.
