Design

One thing's for sure, you'll get noticed on the road with your own 2021 RAV4 Prime! Whether it's its 2-tone body with black roof, its aggressive front end, its 19-inch wheels (the largest to date for a RAV4 hybrid) that also feature 2-tone paint (the 2020 Outlander PHEV's wheels are no bigger than 18 inches), its adaptive front lighting or its vertical striped LED taillamps, it really looks great!

Power to spare

The 2021 RAV4 Prime offers much more power than its rival! In fact, the RAV4 Prime's powertrain, made up of a 2.5-litre 4-cylinder Atkinson-cycle engine in addition to electric motors, offers a very interesting net power output of 302 horsepower, compared to less than 200 horsepower in the case of the Outlander PHEV. What's more, you'll enjoy an all-electric range of 60 kilometres, the highest in the class, compared to 35 kilometres for the Outlander, as well as a 0–96 km/h sprint in only 5.8 seconds. At Toyota, only the sporty Supra GT is faster, that's all!

And if we don't know the recharging time of the RAV4 Prime, Toyota's other Prime model, the Prius, has the best recharge time in its class, with only 5 hours 30 minutes on a 120V household outlet and only 2 hours 10 minutes on a 240 V level 2 terminal; so we can expect the RAV4 Prime to have fairly short recharge times, even shorter than the Outlander PHEV, which takes 3.5 hours on a 240V terminal.

A most spacious interior full of commodities

With room for up to 5 occupants and their luggage, the 2021 RAV4 Prime has a generous 1,065 litres of cargo space behind the rear seats, compared to 861 litres in the Outlander PHEV. And if you fold down the second row, the RAV4 Prime can fit up to 1,977 litres, compared to 1,886 for its rival.

In terms of commodities, you'll be truly spoiled with the RAV4 Prime, including heated front and rear seats, a driver's seat with lumbar support and 8-way power adjustment, ambient lighting, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and leather-wrapped, heated steering wheel as well as a leather shift knob with red stitching, among others.

A technological gem

In terms of on-board technologies, the RAV4 Prime has nothing to envy its rival, with features such as a full-colour head-up display (a first for the RAV4), wireless charging for your phone, an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, the 5-door Smart Key system, an automatic garage door opener integrated into the rear-view mirror and many more, depending on the model chosen.

When it comes to safety, the RAV4 Prime features state-of-the-art technologies such as the Toyota Safety Sense Suite with the Pre-Collision System and Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert, Automatic High Beams and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control. Rear Cross Traffic Braking (RCTB) and front and rear Park Assist with Automatic Braking (PA with AB) are also available, depending on the model; note that many of these technologies are not available on the 2020 Outlander PHEV.
