Exterior Design

The 2020 Toyota Highlander still boasts a sleek, rugged design with a few aesthetic enhancements, including new LED taillamps, LED fog lamps, a panoramic glass sunroof and 18" or 20" wheels, depending on the model you choose. Finally, its sculpted lines as well as its low, wide stance give it a killer look! A total of 7 versions of the Highlander are available, compared to only 6 for the Subaru model.

Technical Specifications

Whichever model you choose, this Toyota SUV will be equipped with a powerful 295-hp 3.5-litre V6 engine; that's more than the 2020 Ascent, with its 260-hp powertrain. What is more, the Highlander offers a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds on all models, while the Subaru SUV only offers between 2,000 and 4,500 pounds. Depending on the model, the Highlander will be available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

But the Highlander also has a major advantage over its rival: it is indeed offered in a hybrid version, which is no a possibility on the Ascent. The Highlander Hybrid boasts a net output of 240 horsepower and best-in-class energy efficiency of only 6.9 L/100 km! On top of this, it can tow up to 3,500 pounds, more than some Ascent models.

The 2020 Highlander is loaded with commodities, too, and one thing’s for sure, it has nothing to be ashamed of when compared to the competition! Depending on the version and options you choose, you may be able to enjoy features such as heated and ventilated front seats, a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, three-zone climate control, an 8- or 10-way power adjustable driver's seat—compared to 6-way manual or 10-way power for the Ascent—cloth, SofTex or leather upholstery and an air purifier, among others.

On-board technology is also a big part of the Highlander and Highlander Hybrid! So, depending on the version you choose, you could find aboard technologies such as a navigation system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, an 8-inch or 12.3-inch touchscreen—the largest in its category, compared to 6.5 to 8 inches in the Subaru—wireless charging for your phone, an 11-speaker JBL audio system with Clari-Fi technology and even more.

And when it comes to safety, your Toyota SUV offers you a host of state-of-the-art features that are standard on all versions of Highlander, which is not always the case with the Ascent. For example, you'll get the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 system, which includes Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert, Automatic High Beams, Full-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control and Lane Tracing Assist. You'll also benefit from a backup camera and Intelligent Clearance Sonar with automatic emergency braking for rear cross-traffic, among other features.
