A relatively recent technology, the hydrogen fuel cell and its operation generates numerous questions. Taking place aboard a few models on the market, among which the Toyota Mirai, to see at Longueuil Toyota on the South Shore of Montreal, close to Brossard and Boucherville, the hydrogen battery is another option for those who wish for an eco-friendly vehicle, but do not want to purchase a fully electric model.
The FCEV technology—for Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle—allows the vehicle to be powered by an alternative fuel, in this case, hydrogen. Hence, since these cars do not consume fossil fuel, they do not emit any CO2; in fact, to produce the electricity required for the vehicle’s operation, the hydrogen mixes with the oxygen present outside the vehicle. The result of this chemical reaction? Water is the only tailpipe emission!
On top of this, the FCEV’s power unit, based on that of the Toyota Prius, is able to “decide” if it will use the energy stored in the battery, or it will instead use the fuel cell’s energy.
In the same way as a hybrid or gas model! And a significant advantage of the Toyota fuel cell car: you can fill it up in only 5 minutes, unlike the several hours of recharge that are necessary when you opt for a hybrid vehicle!
When you step on the accelerator, the electricity generated by the fuel cell is directly transmitted to the electric motor; in addition, you will also be able to use the kinetic energy regenerated when braking to recharge the battery! And speaking of the battery, it is the same as you will find in the Toyota hybrid models, with the exception that the Mirai will increase its voltage to 650V.
To start, forget about the Hindenburg airship disaster, your Mirai will not explode in case of collision! Indeed, various sensors will instantly close the output valves as soon as a collision is detected. What is more, all the various safety systems popular on board Toyota vehicles are also available in the fuel cell versions; you will hence be able to take the steering wheel in complete peace of mind!
To find out more about this Toyota technology or about the Toyota promotions and financing offers available on the South Shore of Montreal, come meet us in Longueuil, at your Toyota dealer! We are located not far from Brossard and Boucherville.
